Fareshare is once again partnering with Tesco and the Trussel Trust for it's twice a year event the Neighbourhood Food Collection. This project takes place in Tesco stores nationwide to collect donated food items for distribution by Fareshare or Trussel Trust to local communities. All the food donated will be distributed within the UK. In December 2013 a record 4.3 million meals was donated and now targets are set to collect 5 million meals this weekend!
Transform Community providing Fareshare services within Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross will be attending local Tesco stores to inform and encourage shoppers to take part in the event. Transform staff, volunteers and in store staff will be participating to greet customers and encourage them to buy one or two additional items for donation. Tesco is not profiting from this collection and will also top customer donations by 30% based on estimated value and weight of the food donated.
Volunteers came down to local Tesco stores and provided leaflets indicating items acceptable for donation or accepting money donation by customers. Customers were able to drop off any items they were happy to donate after they had completed their shopping at the helpdesk near the entrance of the store. Tesco will pack goods for distribution to one of Fareshares 18 regional centres across the country.
Chris Bush, Tesco UK Managing Director said: " It will be a real challenge to beat our existing record of 4.3 million meals donated in one collection, but i've been knocked out by the generosity our customers, colleagues and volunteers for their help in reaching that incredible total."
With an increasingly growing numbers turning to local charities for support it is a great boost to an escalating problem. Fareshare estimates that four volunteers over a three hour period will collect half a tonne of food contributing 1190 meals. Since December 2013 Tesco has donated 10.2 million meals!
