Lara Bird MP Visits Transform Community Development

Our new MP, Lara Bird, visited Transform Community Development's Alasdair Macqueen House yesterday to learn more about the organisation's work in strengthening local communities across Dundee.

During the visit, discussions focused on the impact of community-led initiatives and the importance of partnership working in addressing social and economic challenges. A key topic was how Dundee can benefit from the recently announced National Programme to Redistribute Surplus Food (here). The programme helps divert good-quality food that would otherwise go to waste, ensuring it reaches individuals and families who need additional support.

This approach not only helps tackle food insecurity but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing food waste. Lara was particularly interested in how Transform Community Development works with national partners to maximise the reach and impact of the scheme, enabling community groups to provide practical support while building stronger local connections.

The visit also included discussion of the Prime Minister's plans to increase housebuilding across the UK and the role that housing plays in community development. Access to safe, affordable housing remains a significant challenge for many communities. We discussed how investment in housing can deliver long-term social benefits, supporting healthier communities, improving wellbeing, and creating opportunities for local economic growth.
